Summer Update
It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over. This summer has turned out to be one of the busiest of my career, which is why things have been quiet here on the blog. The craziness began in June when I was hired to shoot a number of backcountry camping scenarios for Cascade Designs to highlight their new line of MSR tents. We shot at number of locations including here in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah as well as in the North Cascades and on the Olympic Coast–both in Washington state. I extended my time in the NW to meet with clients in the Seattle/Portland areas to show my new print portfolio that I wrote about back in May. The meetings were a success, and I met some wonderful people so it was well worth the extra time out of the office.

Arriving back in SLC at the end of June, we launched into full production mode for two sizable commercial shoots which took place at the end of July. Columbia Sportswear hired me and my team to shoot some of their new spring/summer line of hiking and trail running apparel. Top-notch product, great weather, easy-going models, and a hard-working crew made the shoot a blast, and Nikon’s D3x produced big and beautiful images. The photos will be in Columbia stores and on the web sometime next spring.
Immediately after the Columbia gig we headed to Colorado for the final part of a long-term project I’ve been working on with Wenger. My team and I created more work for their ongoing rebranding campaign, which launched last summer (examples here). The week proved to be an exciting one, and I’m looking forward to sharing more of what was created in the weeks to come.

The craziness ended with a 10 day road trip with my wife through the upper mid-west to meet with ad agencies and companies in Chicago, Milwaukee and Minneapolis. I met a lot of great people and got some good leads on work for the fall, so the time on the road was well spent.
Looking into the fall the momentum appears to continue. We’re working on several more big assignments and are planning additional trips to meet more creatives in Los Angeles/San Diego as well as a return trip to the Portland/Seattle area. Got a few personal projects up my sleeve as well. Stay tuned for additional updates and announcements.

Inspiration

One of the many things I love about photography as a profession is the many amazing people I’ve met over the years. An assignment I shot in May for Fitness Magazine introduced me to another amazing human being. At the age of 16, Hilary Hopkins was involved in a horrific car accident that killed her sister and left Hilary basically a paraplegic. Through hard work and positive attitude Hillary is now able to stand without support, lift weights, and even walk for 60 minutes with some assistance. I can’t even begin to imagine all that Hilary has been through but am thankful to have met someone so remarkable. Hearing her story made our photo shoot that much more inspiring. It was clear that her positive energy and strength have a huge effect on those around her. You can read her story on Fitness Magazine’s website and in the July issue.
